World Paloma Day

I love the random holidays that come up for no major reason other than something to celebrate. National Tequila Day for example, I'm a fan. Not that I need a national day to drink fine tequila, everything in moderation ;) but it is fun to celebrate with something specific. Today is World Paloma Day so you know I'll be celebrating. The Paloma is kind of like a grapefruit margarita but it's usually topped with a sparkling soda of some sort so it's got bubbles. It's fun and tasty if you do it right.

If you want to join me in the celebration, do yourself a favor and make it with a nice quality tequila. And that doesn't mean you have to spend $50+ on say Clasa Azul (it's like $100 a bottle but damn it's smooth) Casamigos Blanco is around $30 and it's great. I recently did a little taste test to see if I could tell the difference between Casamigos Blanco and Patron (silver). Patron was the only other tequila my in-laws had at their house but I could tell the difference right away! Patron is, frankly, awful. The Rock's new tequila Teramana is very good too. I haven't tried his Reposado yet but the Blanco is fantastic.

Now for the Paloma recipe, my preferred tequila here would be Casamigos Reposado because the flavors in that fit very well with the grapefruit favors. It's worth the little extra $ but the blanco is good here too.

Paloma Recipe:

2 oz. tequila (I recommend Casamigos Reposado)

1 oz. fresh grapefruit juice

.75 fresh lime juice

.25 oz simple syrup or agave nectar

2 dashes Orange bitters

Spash of grapefruit soda

Mix everything except the soda in a cocktail shaker with ice for about 15 seconds. Strain into highball or rocks glass and add fresh ice. Garnish with a slice of grapefruit and maybe a little mint leaf for fancy looks and enjoy!
